  Later that day I saw Alice again. I was going back to London on the train and was walking through a carriage on the way to get some food. I saw her first, sitting on a seat next to the aisle, staring out the window. Sensing that somebody was approaching she looked towards me and I knew as soon as I caught her eye that she recognised me. She reddened slightly, but her face didn't follow it through and she stared at me as much as I did at her, each of us daring the other to let on what had happened.

  And then I was passed and nothing came of it.
